Adyen Agentic does not implement UCP as its own protocol, and it is not a self-serve tool like Shopify's Agentic storefronts. It is an enterprise API suite, currently limited to US enterprise merchants, that connects to multiple protocols on a merchant's behalf. If your goal is UCP compliance specifically, check your own manifest directly rather than assuming Adyen coverage substitutes for it.
What Adyen Agentic actually is
Adyen announced Adyen Agentic on June 16, 2026, in New York, describing it as a "universal translator" for agentic commerce. Per Adyen's own press release, it is a suite of modular APIs built around three layers:
Agentic Feed
Catalog and inventoryStructures and distributes real-time catalog, pricing, and availability data into conversational commerce environments, so AI agents have accurate, machine-readable product and stock information.
Agentic Cart
Checkout and fulfillmentConnects an AI agent's request back into a merchant's existing checkout, tax, fulfillment, and order-management systems, without requiring those systems to be rebuilt.
Agentic Payments
Auth and fraudHandles token portability, authentication, risk and fraud management, and merchant-of-record preservation, extending Adyen's existing payments infrastructure into agentic transactions.
The actual differentiator: hedging across protocols
Per Adyen's own materials, Adyen Agentic supports the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), and Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), and is compatible with Meta's AI checkout at launch. Adyen has also joined the x402 Foundation, a Linux Foundation initiative developing a separate open standard for payments over HTTP. Karan Katyal, Adyen's Global Head of Agentic Commerce, framed the reasoning directly: "we intentionally designed Adyen Agentic to help retailers integrate once and participate across evolving platforms, protocols, and experiences, without having to bet on which ecosystems ultimately win."
That is a meaningfully different bet than either Stripe or PayPal has made. Stripe co-developed its own standard. PayPal connects to several platforms but frames it as participation, not neutrality. Adyen's own positioning is explicitly about not picking a side while the space is still unsettled.
Who can actually use it right now
Per Adyen's own announcement, Adyen Agentic is available on a limited basis to enterprise merchants in the United States, with global expansion planned but unscheduled. This is not a settings toggle a small merchant can flip on, unlike Shopify's Agentic storefronts. Named strategic partners include American Express, Mastercard, Visa, and Salesforce, and named enterprise participants include ESW, Scheels, Sezane, and SharkNinja.
Adyen vs Stripe vs PayPal
| Adyen | Stripe | PayPal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | Hedges across UCP, ACP, and AP2 simultaneously | Co-developed its own standard, ACP | Connects to multiple AI platforms through one integration |
| Availability | Limited to US enterprise merchants at launch | Self-serve for existing Stripe merchants | Access via request form |
| Announced | June 16, 2026 | September 29, 2025 | October 28, 2025 |
| UCP support | Yes, named directly | No direct UCP support | Yes, announced alongside Google's launch |
None of the three makes a merchant UCP-compliant on its own. Supporting a payment processor that connects to UCP addresses the payment and checkout layer, but a UCP manifest at /.well-known/ucp is a separate, specific technical requirement. See our Stripe guide and PayPal guide for how that same distinction plays out on each side.
Checking for UCP specifically?
Whatever payment infrastructure you use, check whether your site actually publishes a valid UCP manifest.
